How to Deal with Condensation and Prevent Mould in Your Liverpool Rental?

Noticing misty windows or small patches of mould? These are typical signs of condensation, which can affect many homes, especially older properties commonly found in Liverpool’s student and residential areas. That’s why, at Address Properties, we work closely with tenants to spot the signs early, identify the cause, and offer simple, practical solutions to manage moisture and improve air quality.

But don’t worry it’s usually not a serious issue, and with a few small changes, you can easily prevent it from becoming a problem.

What is Condensation and Why Does it Happen?

Condensation happens when warm, damp air hits something cold like your windows, bathroom tiles, or walls. Everyday things like cooking, showering, or drying clothes indoors all add moisture to the air. If the temperature of your home is not at least 18℃, this moisture will quickly turn to condensation and, over time, can lead to mold.

If this is something that you have noticed in your Liverpool student house or rental property, don’t worry it’s nothing to panic about. A few small changes in your daily routine can help keep things dry and mold-free.

Why It’s Worth Dealing With

Apart from looking and smelling bad, mould can trigger allergies or make asthma worse. It can also become a more serious issue if left untreated, which may lead to additional complications later in the tenancy.

Whether you’re living in a student house near Smithdown, a flat in the city centre, or a cosy terrace in Wavertree, keeping condensation in check helps your home feel fresher, healthier, and easier to live in.

Simple Ways to Prevent Condensation and Mould

Let’s break it down with some easy fixes you can start using today:

Ensure that your home is heated to at least 18℃

If the temperature of your home is maintained at 18℃+ this will help to eliminate the production of condensation. We understand that you may be cautious about exceeding your utility cap, but heating the property to at least 18℃ should keep you below the allotted usage, whilst also preventing mould growth.

Open your windows a little every day

Fresh air is your best friend. Even opening your window for 10–15 minutes a day (especially after cooking or showering) makes a big difference.

Use extractor fans

Make sure fans in your bathroom and kitchen are on when the room is in use, and for a short while after. This will help clear out moisture quickly. If there’s no fan, open a window during and after.

Avoid drying clothes on radiators

We get it, it’s Liverpool, and the weather’s not always on your side. But drying clothes inside adds a lot of moisture to the air. Try using a clothes airer near a window or in a ventilated room instead.

Wipe down windows and sills

If you wake up and your windows are wet, give them a quick wipe. It takes seconds and stops moisture soaking into your walls or window frames.

Move furniture away from walls

Just a small gap behind your bed or wardrobe helps air flow and stops damp patches forming in hidden spots.

Try a dehumidifier

Even a basic one from B&M or Amazon can help suck up extra moisture. They’re especially useful in colder months or for ground-floor rooms.

Noticed Mould? Here’s What to Do

If you spot a bit of mould, clean it gently with a mould spray or a mix of water and bleach. Keep the room well-ventilated and wear gloves.

But if the mould keeps coming back or it’s in a difficult-to-reach area, don’t worry—just let us know. At Address Properties, our in-house maintenance team is here to help. We’d prefer to address the issue straight away rather than allowing the problem to worsen.
