How To Keep Your House Warm This Winter Without Any Waste.

As we settle into winter here in Liverpool and the temperature continues to drop, it’s likely that you will be using more energy in your Address Properties home. So, if you’re worried about exceeding your utility cap or simply want to be more conscious about your energy usage, we’re here with some great tips on how to save energy in your student home this winter:

Set Your Thermostat Sensibly

  • If you can, turn your thermostat down. If you keep your home heated between 18°C and 20°C this should ensure that you remain comfortable but aren’t using up too much energy too quickly

Switch Things Off At The Socket

  • Make sure you are turning off your electrical equipment at the socket when they are not in use, especially when you are leaving the property for an extended period of time.

Close Your Doors

  • When your heating is on, keep the doors to each room in your house closed. This will trap in the heat and keep your home warmer for longer.

Avoid Drying Your Clothes On Your Radiator

  • Do not leave towels and wet clothes on radiators, as this will lessen how effectively they can warm the room.

Ensure Your Radiators Aren’t Blocked

  • Make sure that the furniture in the property isn’t blocking any radiators. If sofas and chairs are pushed up against radiators, the heat will be trapped and your rooms won’t get as warm, so give the heat space to circulate.

Close Your Curtains and Blinds Whilst Heating Your Home

  • Keep blinds and curtains closed when it’s dark. The nighttime chill will make the glass of your windows cold. So block out the cold by using blinds and curtains to create an extra barrier.

Wash Your Clothes At A Cooler Temperature

  • Run your washing machine cooler. Put washes through 30 degrees, make sure every load is a full load, and put through on a ‘quick wash’ to save energy.

Cook Consciously

  • When cooking keep the lid on your pans, as this will trap in heat and reduce cooking time, saving more energy. Additionally, If you have the time, try batch cooking your meals. Reheating uses less energy than cooking from scratch every night, and it’s super convenient if you have a busy schedule.

Warm Up Your Space With Homely Decor

  • Layer up your home’s interior to maximise warmth. You can make your home feel more warm and toasty by furnishing it with soft throws and blankets, using a thicker duvet in winter and using rugs to cover cold floors. Adding these touches not only make your house feel more like a home, but mean that you don’t have to rely solely on the heating system.

By making some of these simple changes and following these easy steps you will have way more control over your energy usage this winter, and year round.
